Full Description

Alleged site of Roman camp. Knox agrees with Stukely and Chalmers in placing the Roman station of 'Tina' at King's Ford, on the North Esk, below its confluence with the West Water. The distance from the (bogus) camp of Aesica (NO55NW0012) is exactly eight Roman miles. Roy places this station at Bridge of Morphy near the mouth of the North Esk. 'Tina' is, presumably, derived from Richard of Cirencester's 'Ad Tinam' and therefore bogus, but Chalmers, presumably, on Richard's evidence shows 'Ad Tinam' exactly on the site of the Balmakewan Roman Camp, NO 665 666 (NO66NE0005), which was not discovered by St Joseph until the late 1960s. The site of the Roman fort of 'Tina' is said to be in the part Stracathro parish on the north side of the North Esk (i.e. in the area if NO 628 661). Air photographs and ground survey in 1958 failed to reveal any vestiges of this alleged Roman fort in the areas centred NO 628 661 and NO 618 663. (See nearby Roman temporary camp, NO66NW0013, which may possibly be identified as 'Tina').
