Full Description
A walkover survey carried out by AOC Archaeology in February and March 2015 following clearance of dense areas of gorse recorded a total of 35 features of prehistoric and post-medieval date. A hut circle and number of clearance cairns had previously been recorded (NJ24SE0002) within this area and the walkover survey identified a total of 16 clearance cairns centred at circa NJ27822125, two stone/boulder dykes and several possible structures which may be contemporary with the hut circle. The cairns, in the northern part of the survey areas, were grass and heather covered stone mounds measuring between 2m and 5m in diameter and between 0.5m and 0.1m high. The survey also identified another possible hut circle at NJ2803041743. Other features recorded included the remains of a stone building, comprising stone footings on the south side of a track, and which may had been a shieling or bothy. The remains of the boundary dyke which enclosed the Wood of Allachie in the 19th century were recorded as four separate dykes. No trace was found of a small ruinous building (NJ24SE0104) that was shown on the OS 1st edition map to the southeast side of this dyke. No trace was found of the lime kiln (NJ24SE0105) depicted on the 1st edition OS map near the southern boundary of the survey area. Other small pit features were also recorded although their function is unknown, possibly related to quarrying.
