Full Description
Site of souterrain which was partly destroyed by road works before being excavated. The remaining portion extended in a sweeping curve for some 14.5m with large flat stones set on edge forming the sides. There was no evidence remaining to show whether any part of the structure had been roofed over. The souterrain was infilled with dark brown earth, the upper layers of which were flecked with charcoal. Amongst the infill were the fragments of small saddle quern which had been broken. A paved area, which was found within the curve of the souterrain, showed considerable signs of heating, and quantities of charcoal were compacted on to the stones. No remains of the timber hut survived. To the north of the souterrain and its associated hut lay 3.8m of a single course of walling, 0.8m thick, of roughly dressed sandstone slabs. A small V-shaped ditch ran from the corner of this structure in a northwesterly direction. The nature of the infill suggested that this belonged to the souterrain period rather than the walling. Within the later building were two carved stone fragments. The first appeared to be the upper portion of a primary cross-slab, and the second probably part of either a funerary monument or some architectural feature of probable 13th century date, from the carving on it.
