Full Description
The village of Charlestown of Aberlour (also known simply as Aberlour) was founded in 1812 by Charles Grant, Laird of Elchies, although an earlier settlement existed in this location. Grant initially feued 100 plots of land, with the idea to encourage industry, trade and manufacture. The village was elected a burgh of barony in 1814. The village stands on the south bank of the River Spey, and by the later 19th Century was home to its own hospital, orphanage, schools, gas works, bowling green and curling rink. A railway station was opened in Aberlour in 1863, and only closed to passengers in 1965 although the station remained open until 1971.
