Full Description
Site of cairn and prehistoric burials destroyed during construction of the railway. During excavations for the Caledonian Railway several 'ancient graves' were uncovered in the gravel terrace of the South Esk. They ranged from circa 1.8m to circa 2.75m in length and 1.2m deep in gravel. Three contained a quantity of incinerated bones and charcoal, and in one was found a fragment of 'ancient urn' and a piece of iron. Another which contained no objects or bone, was surrounded by a circular ditch circa 10.6m in diameter and cut circa 0.3m into the gravel.
