Full Description
Site of a castle. There are no above ground traces of Dun Castle, which belonged to the Erskines. Antiquarian accounts in the late 19th century ascribed an ice-house at NO 6679 5990 as the vault of the castle but, as this is set on the sloping bank of a stream, this is unlikely. The arched gateway is said, by Jervise, to be of possibly early 16th century date, but appears to be post-16th century It is 3.5 high, 5.0m long and 1.0m thick with ring moulding on the north side. The south side has been refaced. Excavation in July 2014 at the site of the medieval castle of Dun (NO65NE0001) uncovered large foundations believed to be those of the medieval castle and a large ditch which, may relate to some enclosing works or earlier defences. Further excavation was carried out in 2016 uncovering what are thought to be the remains of the 14th century castle. This was likely to have been a tower house surrounded by a curtain wall and ancillary buildings.
