Full Description
Site of a sawmill and bobbin mill, recorded by J Gilliatt from documentary research. J and A McDonald (John McDonald and Co) were established bobbin makers when they established their Hayfield Sawmill premises on Ernest Street in the late 1880s. The premises were described as a Turning Factory and Bobbin Factory, and was steam powered, with a small stream providing the water for the steam engine, and with a drying room over the boiler house for seasoning wood. The business declined in the early 20th century and the premises were listed in 1912 as unlet and in 1915 as uninhabitable. Its exact location is unclear.
