Full Description
Archaeological monitoring of groundworks for redevelopment of the former Fisherman's Association recorded the remains of successive phases of the post medieval harbour (NO64SW0028). The development site includes an area developed as part of the 18th century harbour built to replace the original 14th century harbour at Danger Point. On the OS 1st edition map the development area is bisected by the Borthock Burn with a slipway and smithy on the north bank and winding gear for a patent slip on the south bank. By 1921 the burn had been culverted and covered over and the plot levelled to form a working area. During the 20th century the site was occupied by the Fisherman's Association. A large warehouse and ice factory dominated the site and buildings on the street frontage provided space for offices and a chandlery. A watching brief over groundworks across the site was carried out in 2012 by AOC Archaeology, which recorded a layer of made ground over the whole site, which sealed the concrete roof of the Burn culvert and probably relates to the late 19th century resurfacing of the plot. The culvert was constructed in a single phase: on the east side of the site it abutted the bridge and the outer wall of the pre-existing slipway on the north bank of the burn. On the south bank the concrete arch was set against a stone structure which could be a retaining wall or sea wall consolidating the land on which an 18th century naval battery (NO64SW0074) was constructed.
