Full Description
In 2011, an archaeological evaluation was undertaken over this area by AOC in advance of a proposed housing development. In total, 58 machine cut trenches were opened, equating to just over 10 percent of the total development area. The only features revealed by the trenching were two short sections of linear ditch and a single pit. The ditches were interpreted as possible historical land divisions or similar agricultural features. No artefacts were recovered from any of these features and they remain undated. A small assemblage of 17 lithics (flint, quartz and agate), including core fragments and retouched pieces, was recovered from the topsoil. The assemblage was relatively undiagnostic although the knapping technique suggests an Early Bronze Age date for at least some of the pieces, a notion reinforced by the presence of bipolar worked quartz within the assemblage. It is assumed that modern ploughing has truncated and disturbed any associated in situ archaeological deposits and features. The late 18th Century road depicted on Ainslie's map of 1794 was not identified in any of the evaluation trenches suggesting that modern ploughing has removed all trace of this feature.
