Full Description

A watching brief was undertaken by SUAT Ltd in 2001 over mains replacement work close to Arbroath Abbey, in the area of Abbey Street, Abbey Park and Abbey Path. Test pits excavated at the convergence of these three streets revealed possible medieval ground surfaces and medieval pottery sherds, while those exacavated further northwest along Abbey Street showed some possible medieval remains but the area was greatly disturbed with many modern material deposits. In total, 22 test pits were excavated. A further watching brief by SUAT in January to April 2002 during lowering and repaving through the Pend on the west side of the abbots house exposed the base of walls lining this passageway into the former abbey precinct. A small group of pottery from 13th/14th to 18th/19th century date was recovered.
