Full Description
An archaeological evaluation was undertaken within the scheduled area around Hospitalfield House (de-scheduled in 2011) in advance of construction of a proposed director's house for the Hospitalfield House Trust. Four trenches (circa 4 percent of the area) were excavated on 6th November 2001. Only two phases of modern field drains were discovered. The site was partially occupied by a small 19th century pump-house, of red sandstone with a deeply sunken floor, which was to be demolished. Between June and November 2003 a watching brief was carried out, also by SUAT, for works associated with the construction of the house, garage and access road. One sherd of medieval pottery was discovered in a brick and mortar demolition deposit associated with renovations of Hospitalfield House. The remaining discoveries were the ditches for the late 18th century drive which formerly passed through the site, water pipes associated with the former pump-house, field drains of the 19-20th centuries and a sewer pipe from the same era. No medieval features or deposits were discovered during either investigation.
