Full Description

Site of a former drill hall which is shown on the OS maps from the 2nd edition OS map onwards. It is reported as having been the drill station for volunteer artillery in 1900, and still in use in the Second World War. The building had a high arched entrance flanked by symmetrical windows surmounted by shallow pediments. An archaeological evaluation was undertaken by Scotia Archaeology prior to development of the site but no early material was recorded. A post pit, which was uncovered, was considered to be related to a bakery, which had stood on the site after the drill hall had been demolished. A few sherds of 19th century pottery were also recovered.
