Full Description

Site of the market and its cross. The market area of the burgh, until the middle of the 19th century, was in the centre of the High Street in front of the tolbooth. An early reference to the market cross occurs in 1564 when a complaint was brought against a Dundee burgess for breaking the market cross of the burgh and taking away a part of it. The market cross, which was crowned with a unicorn, was removed in 1746 because it obstructed traffic and afterwards vanished. The site is marked by metal road studs in the form of a cross.
