Full Description

A desk-based assessment and walkover survey were carried out by S. Farrell in May 2004 in advance of a proposed expansion programme at Hatton Mill quarry. Following on from this, a walkover survey and 15 percent trial trenching evaluation was carried out by CFA in September and October 2004. The walkover survey revealed medieval and post-medieval agricultural remains, including rig and furrow and enclosure banks. For the evaluation, a total of 85 trenches excavated across the site. The remains of seven enclosures of varied types, defined by ditches, post holes, or a combination of the two were revealed. Also uncovered were two square barrows and 21 long cist burials. A cremation burial dating to the Bronze Age was recorded. A ditch and the remains of an associated bank which may be Neolithic were also recorded. Extensive elements of an abandoned field system were represented by shallow linear ditches. Within the currently cultivated field, there were no certain remains of the rig and furrow that was observed during the walkover survey - all of the archaeological remains within the cultivated field were undergoing varying degrees of plough truncation.
