Full Description

A watching brief was carried out by CFA in 2006 over topsoil strip associated with the A92 upgrading. In this area, 55 archaeological features were recorded, many of them concentrated on a slight knoll 50m east of Meadows Wood (centred on NO 6057 3903). Features included a badly truncated 'L' shaped portion of a palisade slot, possibly Neolithic in date, post-holes in an arc formation which may represent the remains of a post-ring roundhouse, pits, slots, and a pit alignment. A small number of pottery sherds and lithics were recovered during the excavation, along with concentrations of charcoal and hazelnut shells. The charcoal was subsequently identified as hazel and alder. The pottery from pit F41 has been identified as Neolithic Grooved ware. Three features in this area also produced burnt bone, identifiable fragments were all of animal, including cattle, sheep and bird bones. Four fragments of a perforated bone pin were recovered, which is significant due to its recovery from a non-funereal context. It is thought to be Late Neolithic or Early Bronze Age in date. Three ground stone tools were recovered, along with a fragment of a flint nodule and two flaked lithics.
