Full Description
Whisky Distillery, in use, founded in 1824 by Alexander Reid, who lived at the adjacent Easter Elchies House (NJ24SE0023) for a time. It has been the site of whisky-making for generations. The distillery lies next to the Ringorm burn. The Macallan attributes its success to the use of particularly small copper stills, the smallest on Speyside, and the use of oak casks from Jerez, Spain, that have contained sherry, for maturing the whisky. The buildings were improved in 1892. The number of stills doubled from six to twelve in 1965, from twelve to eighteen in 1974, and from eighteen to twenty-one in 1975. The original distillery and oldest part lies in the northwest of the complex to the east of the dam. Photographic recording was carried out in September 2024 ahead of proposed alterations and other works.
