Full Description
Kinermony House, built in the Scottish Renaissance style in 1913-19 probably by James Leslie Findlay, Edinburgh. It is a 2-storey and attic house, with an irregular 5-bay south front, and 3-storey buildings to the flanks and rear on a steeply sloping site. It is harled, with tooled sandstone ashlar margins and dressings There is a centre door in the 3-bay portion, with an ashlar doorpiece incorporating sidelights that is approached by a flight of steps oversailing the basement and ground floor. To the left, there is an ashlar canted window at the basement and ground floor. Three of the first floor windows break the wallhead under sandstone gablets. There is regular fenestration to the southwest wing frontage. The irregular gabled rear has a canted bay window, rising the full height. Long and short detailing to the coped ridge and wallhead stacks. There are crowstepped gables and slated roofs. There is a restrained interior, with original wooden lugged chimney pieces with tiled surrounds to the ground floor public rooms. The garden wall is a buttressed brick construction, which partially surrounds the property. The present house is on the 1st edition Ordnance Survey map from circa 1904. There is a walled garden and gate lodge associated with the house. Kinermony is a site of some antiquity. It is said to be a medieval Knights Templar Settlement, and remains of a building, traditionally said to be a House of the Knights Templars, were noted at this site in the past. There is some disagreement as to whether it was a House, or if it was possibly a possession, but there is now no trace and no local knowledge of this building. Kinermony House is built on the site of earlier manor and Barony, and was Home of Innes family of Kinermonie in the 18th Century.
