Full Description

Former King's Cinema which opened in October 1927, with seating for 820, and which closed in October 1985. It was in Art Deco style, painted cream, with two flanking retain units. It was later used as a nightclub. Earlier buildings on the site are depicted on historic OS maps. A watching brief was carried out by CFA in November 2010 during ground breaking works for geotechnical investigations on the site of the then derelict 1920s cinema. The site lies within the conservation area of the historic medieval core of Brechin. The ground investigations consisted of the excavation of seven trial holes. Deposits generally consisted of made ground onto natural subsoil. Two subsoil layers were identified within TH9 overlying natural. These may represent the remains of an old topsoil horizon. No further deposits, features or artefacts of archaeological significance were encountered.
