Full Description

Site of medieval midden. The building of a private garage at the rear of 5 Church Street in 1981, enabled the examination of a rectangular area measuring 4 x 3 m, the first archaeological examination of medieval Brechin. The site was a steep slope between two streets of medieval origin. Most of the topsoil and some of the midden had been removed by mechanical excavator, the eastern section was masked by a newly erected wall and the southern end could not be examined due to water seepage. Excavation, on 24-26 May, revealed garden soil overlying midden deposits and one pit. Around 2.15 m of deposits were recorded between natural subsoil and the modern ground level. Immediately above the pre-midden deposit were 1.4 m of midden deposits dating from the mid 13th century to the early part of the 14th century. Some 184 sherds of pottery, part of the rim of a bronze bowl and a bronze needle (both in excellent preservation), an iron nail, two pieces of lead, two flint flakes and a small quantity of badly decayed bone (not collected) were found. No structures were found. The pottery, fragments of mainly jugs and some cooking-pots, included Scarborough ware, east coast gritty ware, Perth and Aberdeen wares as well as presumably local wares.
