Full Description

Dovecot, dating from the 17th Century. It is a substantial rectangular coursed pinned rubble dovecot on a South facing sloping site, with long elevations to the East and West. The centre entrance is in the East elevation, with some re-used dressings. There is a small square vent in the centre South gable, and a slab rat course encircles the building just below the wallhead. There is a piended slate roof, repaired over the site of a former centre ridge cupola. The interior is lined throughout with 594 stone nesting boxes, commencing 4 feet (1.2 metres) above floor level. The Dovecot served 17th century tower house of Wester Elchies (NJ24SE0024), which is now demolished. It is similar to Ballindalloch Castle dovecot (NJ13NE0011), which is dated to 1696. The site is overgrown.

Period Notes
Probably the late-17th century. The present roof is repaired over the site of a former centre ridge cupola, date unknown. It was designated on 26/01/1971.
