Full Description

Remains of a possible hut circle. An oval, stone-walled hut lies just off the summit. No facing stones could be seen, and, while no trace of contemporary cultivation was visible in the immediate vicinity, 70m to the southeast are traces of L-shaped wall and circa 250m to the northwest are several stone clearance heaps, obscured by vegetation, which may be from contemporary cultivation plots. The hut circle measures 19m east-west by 17m north-south. There is an entrance gap to the hut at the east, and the wall is very substantial. This, and the divisions, suggest either a stone enclosure around a timber hut or an enclosed cremation cemetery. The exposed hill top location favours the latter interpretation, as does the absence of obvious traces of ancient cultivation. A walkover survey carried out by AOC in February to March 2015 (NJ24SE0103) ahead of proposed woodland creation, recorded a total of 16 clearance cairns, two dykes and another possible hut circle.
