Full Description
Site of a cairn. There is disagreement in the antiquarian record about this site. The Ordnance Name Book (1859) says that the cairn was removed 'many years before', but later writers such as Jervise (1863) describe it as if it were still extant, 'a large, clearly artificial and probably sepulchral cairn, on the summit of Cairn Conon Hill, at which barony courts are said to have been held'. J. Wilson (1966) reported that the remains were so scanty as to be interpretable as either a cairn or a dun. He suggests the equation of this site with Castlegary or Castlegregory (NO54NE0013), the Castle being caisteal (a fort). There was nothing visible in the area when visited by the OS in 1978. However around the triangulation point, 200 m west of Cairn Conon farm buildings, there is storm debris on the surface. It is impossible to tell if the knoll on which the trig point stands is wholly natural but if not the cairn would be over 20 m in diameter from east to west. The north side has been quarried and this together with the subsequent plantation may account for the stones on the surface. The aerial photograph overlay on the GIS at the Angus HER shows that the site of Cairn Conon has been returned to agriculture.
