Full Description

A sub-circular enclosure sits on a slight shelf of Little Bawd Hill. To the south is a two-compartmented building and to the northeast another small building with part of an enclosure. Not depicted in the 1st or 2nd edition OS maps, but shown on the current edition (2006) as ruins. The remains were recorded during an archaeological walkover survey by AOC in 2012 ahead of proposed wind farm development. It comprises a sub-circular enclosure measuring 25.2 m by 31.4 m, a small rectangular building (circa 10.1 m by 4.6 m) with adjacent rectangular enclosure and a two-roomed rectangular building measuring 22.6 m by 3.9 m. Field survey by CFA in 2018 ahead of a proposed wind farm identified the remains of three rectangular buildings (32a-b and 32f) and at least five associated enclosures (32c-e and 32g-h). Building 32a (NJ233747801) is a two compartment rectangular building (10 m long by 4 m wide) defined by a drystone wall up to 1 m high. Building 32b (NJ 2336947797 ) is a two compartment rectangular building (7.5 m long by 6 m wide) defined by drystone wall up to 0.7 m high. Enclosure 32c (NJ2336547800) is roughly rectangular (15 m by 10 m) abutting the northern edge of building 32b surviving as the footings of a stone wall. Enclosure 32d (NJ2333247777) is roughly polygonal enclosure (27 m by 25 m) defined by a drystone wall 0.5 m high. Within this enclosure at the southeast side is what may be the outline of a small rectangular enclosure (6 m long by 4 m wide. Circa 5 m to the southeast is possible enclosure 32e (NJ2334347763) which is roughly rectangular, measuring 5 m by 4 m, defined by a turf and stone bank. Building 32f (NJ2332647747) comprised the outline of a rectangular building (20 m by 5 m) split into three or four compartments; it is defined by the remains of a drystone wall measuring 0.5 m high and a possible entrance is visible towards the middle of the east side of the building. A small rectangular enclosure (32g) measuring 4 m by 2 m is visible attached to the south east end of the building and what maybe the outline of a possible semi-circular enclosure (32h) measuring 4 m by 3 m is visible immediately west of the south west end of the building. This enclosure is defined by a low turf bank.
