Full Description

Remains of a small building with attached enclosure is depicted at this location on the 2nd edition OS map (but which does not appear on the 1st edition map). No trace of the farmstead could be found during archaeological walkover survey by AOC in 2012. The outline of a roughly rectangular enclosure and the footings of a rectangular building, abutting its southeast side are visible on modern aerial photographs. Field survey by CFA in 2018 ahead of a proposed wind farm recorded the remains of two rectangular buildings (35a and 35b) abutting a roughly rectangular enclosure (35c) and a possible second small enclosure (35d). Building 35a (centred NJ2327047590, abutting enclosure 35c) is rectangular (16 m by 5 m) defined by tumbled dry stone walls (up to 0.7 m high) and divided into three compartments, each of which appears to have an entrance in the east side. To the north, also abutting the east side of the enclosure, Building 35b (centred NJ2327547570) is rectangular (13 m by 5 m) defined by a wall up to 0.5 m high. Enclosure 35c (centred NJ2326347577) is roughly rectangular, measuring 40 m by 20 m and defined by a turf and stone bank circa 1 m wide and 0.4 m high. The possible enclosure 35d (centred NJ2327047566) is rectangular, measuring 5 m by 3 m wide, defined by a faint turf and stone bank. The enclosure is located within the interior of enclosure (35c) next to the entrance of the larger enclosure. Field survey in May 2022 ahead of a proposed overhead 132kV line (NJ25SE0078) recorded the remains of two rectilinear turf-banked enclosures measuring 40-50 m in length and 20-25 m. The eastern enclosure has two drystone buildings attached along the east side, each measuring 16 m by 5 m and of three compartments. The southernmost building has an annexe projecting west for 4m from the south-west corner.
