Full Description

The remains of a depopulated settlement lie on the lower slopes of Hill of Stob. It is depicted on the OS 1st and 2nd edition maps as disused. There are the remains of one large irregular shaped enclosure and two smaller one, each of which has the remains of buildings attached. There are also several small single buildings scattered between them. From the shape of the enclosures there is a slight possibility that they may be of late medieval date. Remains of the township were recorded during field survey by CFA in 2018 ahead of a proposed wind farm which showed that these are more extensive and complex than previously recorded. From the eastern enclosures shown on the OS 1st edition map a wall continues to the southeast for circa 85 m running to NJ2291447668. A small enclosure (centred NJ2286147695) was noted abutting the southern side of the wall. A further rectangular enclosure and possible enclosure (or building), centred at NJ2284447664), were recorded circa 40 m to the south. The farmstead remains lie well away from the proposed development infrastructure and was not recorded in detail during the field survey. The remains were recorded during field survey carried out in May 2022 ahead of a proposed overhead 132kV line (NJ25SE0078) Eighteen (1a-r) features were identified including enclosures (a, b, e, h) remains of buildings (d, f, g, I, k l, m, o, p, q) a possible corn-drying kiln, a sheepfold (j) probable lambing pen (n) and faint traces of rig and furrow cultivation (r) within a narrow field enclosed to the east.
