Full Description

A monitored topsoil strip and subsequent excavation carried out by AOC Archaeology in 2019 ahead of proposed development (Upper Victoria Phase 2B) recorded various features. In the northern field features included a stone culvert comprising 11 capping stones, stone edging and a cobbled base, as well as curvilinear ditches and a large pit. The southern field contained a concentration of linear and curvilinear features, one with a large assemblage of assorted metal finds, along with several pits, a drystone well, possible kiln, and spreads of material to the south end of the development area. Several possible field enclosures were identified, possibly open-field enclosures of a small farmstead. Farmland and buildings are shown on the 18th century Roy map and other cottages are shown on the 19th century OS maps (see NO53SW0075 and NO53SW0076). Large sub-angular stones found within one of the spreads that also contained a pivot stone may be the remains of the cottages. The well recorded is also shown on the 1st edition map. A large pit to the south of the well contained a collection of iron and copper alloy objects including a large hoop, a small copper alloy object, crucible, smelting pan, bellow, large iron jug, iron knife, iron nails, as well as several roof tiles and a handmade brick. These probably relate to some sort of metalworking within the farmland site. Although some of the ditches provided dateable material, including post-medieval green glaze pottery, many of the enclosures and associated features such as postholes and pits are more difficult to date. A small possible prehistoric structure was also located. See also NO53NW0104 and NO53NW0105.
