Full Description
Site of a dovecot, later used as a smithy, and then an explosives store. The dovecot is depicted as standing on the west site of Pitskelly Quarry on the OS 1st edition map. The circular structure is shown on the 2nd edition at the northwest corner of the quarry, but not annotated. Iy. The structure is circular with a domed roof with a hole in the centre at the top. It is built of red sandstone and other local stone. The quarry, with the circular structure, was filled in circa 1950s by the current farmer to level the field, although exact date not known at present. Excavation was carried out by CFA in 2004 ahead of A92 road realignment, uncovering the building. Excavation revealed the building to be complete and standing to its full height. A level 2 standing building survey was subsequently carried out on the building by CFA. It has survived in remarkable condition with a number of articles still inside, including buckets, spades etc. The survey confirmed that the building had all the attributes of a barrel-shaped dovecot, although the nesting boxes were absent. It is presumed these would have been made of wood. The key feature that defines the structure as a dovecot is the wide ashlar string-course at the base of the dome and the oculus at the dome's centre. At some point in the first half of the 19th Century the dovecot was converted to a smithy with the insertion of a forge and chimney stack. This feature is now thought to be a very rare survival of an explosives store. The building was subsequently demolished to make way for the road.
