Full Description

Following a trial evaluation by CFA in 1998, a watching brief was carried out by CFA in 2006 over the topsoil strip associated with the A92 upgrading. In total 24 features were found on a slight knoll. Identified archaeological features were hand excavated. Excavations revealed a Middle Bronze Age primary post-ring feature truncated by secondary truncated ring-ditch segments, and a nearby Early Neolithic pit. There were ten post-holes recorded from the post-ring feature. The post-holes were generally filled with natural subsoil, with some evidence for posts having been left to rot in situ. Artefacts were recovered from some of the post-holes, including sherds of flat-rimmed ware, fired clay and grain in various states of preservation. Two truncated ring-ditch segments were recorded. The northern segment contained numerous stones, including a saddle quern. Some of the stones, including the quern, appeared to have been laid, possibly as paving. What may have been a large piece of wood was recorded, which was more likely related to an internal feature than being structural. The southern segment similarly contained stones that may have been paving. Sherds of flat-rimmed ware and a pounder/grinder, as well as a large amount of charred cereal grains, were also recovered from the southern segment. Several associated pits or post-holes were recorded that could not be ascribed to either phase. Grains and charred plant remains were recovered from some of the associated features. The type of flat-rimmed ware recovered is typical of the period circa 1600-800 BC. Samples of hazel charcoal and barley grain returned radiocarbon dates ranging from 1450 cal BC to 1210 cal BC (95 percent probability). One sample returned a radiocarbon date of 250-410 cal AD (95 percent probability). The contents of the nearby pit include early Neolithic Carnated Bowl pottery sherds, as well as hazel nutshell, cereal grains, heat-effected sandstone cobbles, charcoal and a small amount of burnt bone. Two samples of charred hazel and hazelnut shell returned radiocarbon dates of 3780-3650 cal BC (95 percent probability).

The Iron Age radiocarbon date is interpreted as being from a later intrusion into the fill of a Bronze Age vessel.
