Full Description
Excavation of a ring ditch structure (located during an evaluation in 1998) was undertaken by CFA in Feb-March 2000 in advance of the proposed A92 road improvements. Excavation revealed the remains of a Bronze Age timber roundhouse of ring-ditch type, with a diameter of circa 8.5m. A second structure, (defined by a series of postholes) was identified to the north of the ring ditch. A large subrectangular pit was located within the main structure. The pit measured 1.75m x 0.65m x 0.25m deep, was located slightly off-centre from the middle of the structure and its long axis ran parallel to the entrance of the roundhouse (in the southeast). Fragments of degraded prehistoric pottery was found in its fill, and it was thought that the pit may represent a grave, although no human remains were recovered. The two structures and pit provided several radiocarbon dates from a range of contexts, all of which were calibrated to the middle or later second millennium cal BC (2 stigma). In May 2003 a further series of evaluation trenches in an area proposed as a deposition area for the A92 upgrade revealed three, possibly four denuded long cists. They were cut into the sand and gravel subsoil. A lack of skeletal material and capstones suggest severe damage through ploughing. They may represent the southern survival of a larger cemetery. The cists were all aligned east-west and are likely to have been of Early Christian date.
