Full Description
Site of a cairn found in 1843 by some woodcutters. On removing a large flat stone, they found a bronze hoard consisting of two bronze vessels, capable of holding circa two-thirds of a pint, of neat workmanship, cast in a rather elegant shape, and with a handle on one side. Also 17 bronze spear or axe-heads, 30-40 bracelets and 6 bronze rings of different sizes and of good workmanship. The ONB states that two cups and six axe-heads were found, and that 1 axe-head was then in the possession of J Ogg, Aboyne. There is no trace of the cairn in a rock strewn area of afforestation. Where the finds were located was unknown until 1971 when a Mr E Oddy of Exeter brought a bronze penannular armlet to the Aberdeen City museum and revealed that he had 15 of the objects in his possession. All of these objects are now in NMS. It would appear that the original hoard had contained at least 60 objects including fragments of at least 5 amber beads.
