Full Description

A watching brief was carried out by MAS in August 2008 during the excavation of trenches for power cables within the historic core of Forfar. Deep deposits of potentially early garden soils were discovered as far west of the Castle Street medieval frontage as the Myre Road car park. A ditch-like profile was observed at 41 Castle Street, along with surviving medieval levels at the base of the trench at 1-5 Castle Street, perhaps indicating the presence of a long medieval ditch running north-south along the west side of the properties fronting on Castle Street. Over 50 sherds of medieval pottery were also recovered from the trenches.
