Full Description

Site of a long cist cemetery. A number of bones and remains of cists have been found while working a sand and gravel quarry in 2003. Remains of several cists have been noted near the top of the quarry face while on a site visit. Subsequent partial excavation by AOC have identified further bones. In July 2004 two further cists were partly exposed near the top of the quarry face and bones from at least three skeletons were collected from the fall near the foot of the face. Further excavation by AOC led to the clearing back the top surface from the quarry face. This revealed a number of long cist burials, bringing the total number of burials so far to 19. Burials included at least two children. A brown glass bead was also recovered athough its exact context is unknown. Some of the burials have returned radiocarbon dates ranging from the 4th to the 7th centuries cal AD.
