Full Description
Site of a souterrain (Wainwright's Rescobie I) discovered during the construction of the railway, near to a bridge crossing the line, in the third field from the farmhouse of Wemyss of Pitscandly. In the structure was found a quern and a quantity 'a good deal' of ashes 'at the inner end'. The site of this souterrain was easily relocated by Wainwright, about 8.15m east of the railway bridge and in the southern half of the deep cutting. Examination of railway construction records show that it is almost certain that the souterrain was discovered during the first quarter of 1837. Wainwright thought that it was unlikely, due to the depth of the cutting, that any remains of the souterrain existed, but suggests that if any do they will be located at the point under the fence and within the field south of the cutting. It has also been suggested that this site was a crannog.
