Full Description

Site of a medieval church with graveyard, and long cist cemetery. Excavation was carried out following the discovery during development work of stonework, medieval ceramics and disarticulated human remains. The excavation uncovered the remains of a stone building of medieval date, the lost medieval church of Ballumbie, and an associated graveyard. Some 120 burials were discovered and excavated. The small church was rectangular in plan with a Laird's aisle attached to the south wall. Within the aisle were the burials of at least 4 individuals, one of which was within a mural tomb on the south wall. A large number of burials were excavated within the church, largely concentrated at the west end, and further burials excavated from the graveyard surrounding the church. Three burials within the church produced short cross or long cross pennies. Beneath the medieval layers was a previously unknown early Christian long cist cemetery. This was enclosed by a ditch with an entrance at the western end. The burials were of both adults and children. One burial had a copper alloy bracelet on its right wrist. At least three fragments of cross-inscribed stones were associated with the burials. See NO43SW0004 for the medieval remains.
