A watching brief over the upgrade of the A92 Dundee-Arbroath road revealed a pit, a ditch and the terminus of a possible souterrain which continued below the existing A92.

A watching brief over the upgrade of the A92 Dundee-Arbroath road revealed a pit, a ditch and the terminus of a possible souterrain which continued below the existing A92. The possible souterrain was curvilinear in form, the cut of which had gently sloping sides and a flat base shallower towards the terminal end. The sub-oval pit was located circa 1.5m from the souterrain within its inside curve. It was irregular in plan with shallow sloping sides and a flat base. The fill comprised dark silt containing large pebbles and a few cobbles. The pit is interpreted as a possible post pit associated with the souterrain. The ditch was located to the north-east of the other features. Its cut had steep sides and flat base. Finds from within the fill included a clay pipe and fragment of slag, suggesting the ditch may be filled with demolition material from the construction of the existing A92. From the souterrain tiny fragments of abraded calcined and unidentifiable bone were collected in samples, while an inner flake of chert/chalcedonic material was recovered from the cut which had been detached from a core thus could date from any period between the Late Mesolithic and Early Bronze Age. Three poorly preserved cereal grains were recovered from the fill of the souterrain, two of which were identified as barley. A bulbous onion grass rhizome was also recovered from the top fill of the souterrain.
