Full Description
An archaeological evaluation was undertaken on part of the footprint of the new Seaview Primary School in Monifieth in November 2007. Three trenches were opened, where it was noted that much of the area had been levelled up to a considerable depth in some areas prior to the laying out of the present playing fields. Only one trench contained a feature consisting of a small area of rough paving. It is unknown what this feature's purpose was but possibly some form of stepping stones over a boggy area might be considered. A number of modern pottery sherds were recovered from the other trenches at a higher level. A watching brief was subsequently carried out during the excavation of the foundation trenches in January and February 2008 by SUAT Ltd. A 19th century probable garden feature and land drain were uncovered, along with an undated area of flattish stones, which may be natural.
