Full Description

Site of a cist overlain by urns, probably the remains of a cairn. In January 1870, while gravel was being removed from a hillock at the base of Tealing Hill, two cinerary urns (one inverted) and a cist were found near the centre of the mound. (The burials were carefully removed by Wm McNicol, who also excavated the souterrain at Tealing). The urns were broken (sketches show collared vessels, one of which is probably a Food-Vessel) and filled with calcined bones, and lay above the cist, one to the east and the other to the west. The cist measured 1.2m x 0.6m and lay east-west. Within the cist was an entire male skeleton, the skull of which was donated to the NMAS in 1871 by Mrs S Fotheringhame. One urn was situated at the east end of the cist, and the other at the west. Both were situated about 0.9m above it. No other objects were found. Nearby are two large stones. The possible site for this cist, when visited by the OS in 1958, was an old gravel pit which lies near the two large stones. Recent dating gives a date of 3683+/-32 BP.
