Full Description

War memorial standing in Anvil Gardens, facing northwest. Rectangular base on 3-stepped plinth. The carved panel has flat fluted pilasters either side of a central panel commemorating the dead of World War One. The block is topped by a pediment with scroll moulding, in turn surmounted by a round column with scroll capital on which is a seated unicorn bearing a shield. Resting on the lowest step of the plinth and inclined back against the memorial is a rectangular polished slab commemorating those lost in WWII, its lettering faded in places. Full transcription of memorial held in AAS Digital Archive. A commemorative paving stone to Admiral Sir Martin Dunbar-Nasmith VC was unveiled on 25 June 2015. Admiral Dunbar-Nasmith was awarded the Victoria Cross for his bravery while commanding a submarine during the Gallipoli campaign.
