Full Description

Possible site of a church. The name 'Heglish Macwhin' is marked in place of the farm of Wheen on maps attributed to Timothy Pont and Robert Gordon, datable circa 1640. Heglish derives from the Gaelic 'Eaglais' : a church. Fields on the farm seem to bear this out, such as 'Chapel-shade' and 'Finneycreech'-, possibly the Gaelic 'Fionne Crioch': the boundary of the holy place. A field close by (which had a small farm on it in 1794 according to Ainslie's map) is called 'Romans' from 'Rath Manach': the monk's rath. Miss Marnie suggests, very tentatively, that this place was the site of a Celtic or Pictish church dedicated to St Comgan or Comgham. No local knowledge or trace of a chapel, although the field names are known.
