Full Description

A stone cist was found in October 1885, when a drain was being dug from the school at Airlie to the road. It lay east-west, and measured 1.10 m to 1.20 m long by 46 cm to 61 cm broad, and was filled with sand, with an Iron Age 3rd-4th century glass cup and a small piece of bone near its middle. The cup, now in the NMAS, is circular, measuring 7.6 cm diameter and 5.8 cm deep. Two other cists were discovered in 1865. One lay circa 18.23 m east of, and the other, 2.74 m west of, the above-mentioned. The western one was oriented east-west and both contained bones. Also, prior to the erection of the school in 1865, a stone cist was found while the road in front of the buildings was being levelled. The glass cup is Roman, 3rd-4th century. Now, no trace of these cists could be discovered. The headmaster of Airlie School believes that they were found where the school playground is now located, but no further information could be obtained.
