Full Description

A watching brief was carried out by CFA Archaeology in October 2016 during topsoil stripping for a quarry extension (Phase 5, Stage 1). This recorded 24 pits, six furrows, a modern animal burial and an irregular shallow gully. One of the pits produced Neolithic Grooved Ware pottery, small amounts of flint, small amounts of hazelnut shell and a single cereal grain. Two were likely to be postholes. Another four appeared to be archaeological in nature though no dating evidence was recovered. The other pits excavated were concluded to have a natural or archaeological origin. A possible hammer stone was recovered from the topsoil at the southeast corner of the stripped area. See NO35SE0219 for Phase 5C and NO35SE0265 for Phase 5, Stage 3.
