Full Description
Approximate site of at least two souterrains (Wainwright's Auchterhouse III and IV). The NSA refers to at least two additional souterrains to the two known (see NO33NW0003 and 10) and states that one contained 'the bones of some animal, and a parcel of the ashes of burnt wood'. The Rev. Inglis refers to two additional souterrains, 'in the immediate neighbourhood two similar subterranean dwellings were also discovered. One of these contained apartments constructed entirely of large flat stones. In these recesses were found wood ashes, several fragments of large stone vessels, and a quern. The other was simply a vault, in which were found a large stone vessel, and a stone celt or a hatchet'. Wainright made a cursory search for these souterrains, but could not discover any trace. He tentatively plotted them between the known souterrains.
