Full Description

Site of a souterrain (Wainwright's Auchterhouse I), discovered before 1795 'at a small distance from the church' according to the OSA. It was possibly in the glebe (information from Rev W M Inglis to D MacRitchie circa 1888, who also confuses this and Wainwright's Auchterhouse II, attributing finds from that souterrain to this one). Its probable site was behind the manse in a well-drained and comparatively sheltered site. There is no record of any contents and the souterrain was destroyed after having been used 'as a storehouse for potatoes'.
