Full Description

Site of a souterrain (Wainwright's Tealing II). It was discovered on Prieston farm some years before 1792, in which year it is described in the OSA as 'composed of large flat stones, without any cement, and consisting of two or three apartments not more than 5 feet wide, covered with stones of the same kind'. Wood-ash, fragments of large earthen vessels and a quern were found in it. The antiquary Warden guesses at 1780 as the date of discovery. Wainwright identified the likely site, as in an ideal situation by a scatter of stones possibly suggesting surface structures and by the fact that the farmer has found parts of the upper stones of two querns.
