Full Description
Site of castle, dating from the early 16th Century, the forerunner of the present castle. It may have been built on an earlier castle site as the earliest records of the estate are 15th Century. The castle consisted of a square tower or keep with three of the angles having turrets characteristic of the 17th Century. Attached to the tower was a small courtyard enclosed by a thick wall. It was occupied by the Gordons, first as tenants of the Earl of Mar and later as owners. About 1754, attached to the original tower, there was a long steep-roofed, high-gabled house with windows high in the east walls, lying parallel with the river. Numerous additions were made by Sir Robert Gordon between 1830 and 1852, when all the buildings were demolished to make way for the new castle.

Earliest records of the estate dated 1451 and 1484; Tudor mansion 1834-8; demolished 1855.
