Summary
A walkover survey, following a desk-based assessment, was conducted by Alder Archaeology in October 2020 in advance of proposed woodland creation, on an area of open hillside and rough pasture of the southwest spur of Creigh Hill (83.09 ha), and more gently undulating ground (12.13 ha) between Middle Coul (NO25NE0073) and Wester Coul (NO25NE0042).

Full Description
A walkover survey, following a desk-based assessment, was conducted by Alder Archaeology in October 2020 in advance of proposed woodland creation, on an area of open hillside and rough pasture of the southwest spur of Creigh Hill (83.09 ha), and more gently undulating ground (12.13 ha) between Middle Coul (NO25NE0073) and Wester Coul (NO25NE0042). A third, much smaller area (7.57 ha) at Castle View, to the southeast of the main area, was also included in the survey. The survey recorded an extensive system of field dykes and features across the south and southwest (NO25NE0082), and the east and northeast (NO25NE0081) areas of the site, with the latter area also including a spread of clearance cairns. The survey also included the area of the previously recorded cairnfield (NO25NE0010). In the southeast, dyke remains, and clearance cairns were recorded at Castle View (NO25NE0080). Cairn Plew, a scheduled prehistoric monument (NO25NE0002), is located at the northwest boundary of the proposed scheme. The remains of two ruined farmsteads (NO25NE0015, NO25NE0083) and a dam and outflow (included in NO25NE0073) were also recorded, although these lay just outside the boundary of the planting scheme.
