Full Description
Site of a souterrain (Wainwright's Airlie VII). It was partially uncovered when visited by the OS in 1861, which has a note from Major Bayley which reads 'Subterranean covered passage, Pictish dwelling. This artificial cavity, of which some of the stones indicating the site were uncovered in my prescence, appears to have been of the nature of the weems discovered in other places in this locality'. Its site was formerly marked by a low mound, which had a tall pine tree planted upon it until 1939, just before the visit of O G S Crawford. He, on the basis of the discovery of tiles and a Roman sword nearby (NO24NE0014), interpreted the site as a bath-house, but this is unlikely. Wainwright believed that the site was probably intact and wrote that its position and remains ..'a low rounded knoll, which immediately catches the eye as extremely suitable for a souterrain, and it is obviously well drained'.. were eye-catching. No trace of this souterrain was visible when visited by the OS in 1970.
