Full Description

Site of a probable Moated Site or Homestead-Moat. A 'fort' was said to have stood at Castledykes, in the southwest extremity of Ruthven parish. It was described in the OSA (1794) as an almost square enclosure containing about 0.4 hectares (1 acre) of ground, surrounded by high earth banks and a deep, broad, water-filled ditch on the outer side. There was a faint suggestion of a broad ditch at this site in 1958 when visited by the OS. This was interpreted as the south-east angle of the earthwork, but the detail was too vague to be accurately surveyed. The site is located in a low-lying field, a doubtful location for a fort. No visible traces of this earthwork were noted by the OS in 1970 and the RCAHMS in 1984. The site is now occupied by a Nursery.
