A programme of archaeological works, including a desk-based assessment followed by watching briefs and evaluation trial trenching, was carried out by AOC Archaeology during 2020, ahead of construction of a new electricity substation and cable connection to the existing Peterhead Substation to the south. Watching briefs were carried out intermittently between March 2020 and December 2020, on controlled topsoil strips across the development site. This covered ground breaking works for the western cable route area, the central area (Area 1), the eastern areas (Area 2 and Area 3), and test pits in the northern area (Area 4). Evidence of post-medieval or later agricultural activity, primarily in the form of furrows, plough-marks, field drains and drainage ditches were identified across the areas. The work did not identify any finds or features of archaeological significance. A trial trenching evaluation was carried out in September 2020 consisting of 38 trenches across the site covered by the watching briefs, excluding the cable route area in the west and positioned to avoid known areas of modern disturbance associated with defunct cable trenches. In total this covered seven percent of the undisturbed area. The areas of the substation site (Areas 2 and 3) were found to have been largely disturbed by the late 20th century works associated with Peterhead Power Station and the existing substation. The made-ground deposit at the north end of the Area 1 was left in-situ. Features recorded by excavation included a series of agricultural features, shallow rig and furrows, field drains and plough-marks (NK14SW0314), and a flint lithic (NK14SW0325) from Area 1. A linear ditch (NK14SW0315), a pit with flint lithic (NK14SW0316), and a flint core (NK14SW0317) from Area 4.
