Full Description
A trial trenching evaluation was carried out by Cameron Archaeology in December 2015 ahead of proposed development. There were 29 trenches excavated, totalling 5 percent of the proposed development area. A total of 997 flints were recovered from the excavations and fieldwalking the site. No features were identified, but given the shallow topsoil and damage from agricultural practices it is unlikely that features will survive in this area. Almost all of the lithic artefacts were recovered from the southern field. A total of 697 of the flints were worked, and 296 were defined as natural. Apart from one particularly large blade tool, which may be a residual Upper Palaeolithic piece, the collection of lithics as a whole is typo-technologically homogeneous, and the finds suggest a date in the Middle to Late Neolithic. The flints include bipolar and platform cores, various scrapers, fire-flints and other tools.
